How to Remove Pages From a PDF (Free, Any Device)

A 40-page bank statement when the landlord asked for proof of address. A scanned contract with every blank reverse side included. A report with an internal appendix that should not go to the client. Removing pages is one of the most common PDF jobs. It is also one where a careless method can leave the “deleted” pages inside the file, where someone with the right software can bring them back. This guide gives the steps for each device, then explains how to check that removed pages are truly gone.
How do you delete pages from a PDF for free?
Open the PDF in a page remover, mark the pages you do not want, and save a new copy. Remove Pages does this in any browser, with no account, no watermark and no upload.
The tool shows every page as a thumbnail, so you see exactly what you are deleting instead of guessing from page numbers. The original file is never changed. The download is a new PDF with “pages-removed” added to the name.
- Open Remove Pages and choose the PDF (up to 200 MB).

Keeping only a few pages
When you want to keep 3 pages out of 60, marking 57 is slow. Mark the 3 pages you want to keep, then press Invert. The selection flips, and the 57 others are now marked for removal. For a clean range such as pages 10 to 14, Split PDF is faster still, because it extracts a range as a new file.
Why at least one page must stay
A PDF with zero pages is not valid, and most readers refuse to open one. The Remove button stays disabled until at least one page is unmarked, so the tool cannot produce a broken file.
Built-in ways on Mac, iPhone, Windows and Android
Apple devices can delete PDF pages without extra software. Windows and Android cannot, apart from a print workaround that damages the document.
Mac: Preview
Open the PDF in Preview and choose View > Thumbnails. Select the pages to remove: Cmd-click picks several, Shift-click picks a run. Press Delete, then choose File > Export as PDF to save a new copy. Preview saves changes to the open file automatically, so duplicate the file first (File > Duplicate) if you want the full version kept.
iPhone and iPad: Files app
Open the PDF in Files. Swipe right from the left edge, or tap the sidebar icon, to show page thumbnails. Touch and hold the page you want gone and choose Delete. The same menu offers Rotate Left, Rotate Right and Insert Blank Page. Changes save to the file when you tap Done, so copy the PDF first if the original matters. Pages go one at a time, which is slow past a dozen.
Windows
Open the PDF in Edge, press Ctrl+P, choose Microsoft Print to PDF and enter the pages to keep, such as 1-3, 6-12. This works, but printing rebuilds the document. Links, bookmarks and form fields are dropped, and text can be harder to select afterwards. The browser tool copies the kept pages instead of reprinting them, so those parts survive.
Android
Android has no built-in page deleter, and the Google Drive viewer only displays PDFs. Open Remove Pages in Chrome. The thumbnails are sized for touch, and the file is processed on the phone, so it works on mobile data without sending the document anywhere.

Are deleted pages really gone from the PDF?
Only if the tool writes a new file. Some editors save changes incrementally, which means the old pages stay inside the PDF and only the index that points to them changes.
The PDF format allows incremental updates by design. An editor can append “page 7 no longer exists” to the end of the file while the original page 7 objects remain earlier in the same file. The feature exists so that large documents save quickly and digital signatures stay valid after later edits. It is defined in the PDF specification, ISO 32000-2. For ordinary tidying this does not matter. When a page is removed because it is confidential, it matters a great deal.
Remove Pages builds a completely new PDF. It copies every unmarked page, in order, into an empty document. Marked pages are never copied. Images and fonts used only by those pages are left out too, so nothing remains to recover.
How to check the result
Compare file sizes. Removing a page full of images should visibly shrink the file. If you deleted 10 scanned pages out of 20 and the size did not move, the pages are probably still inside. Then search the new PDF (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) for a word that appeared only on the removed pages. No match is the expected result.
Why the print workaround is also safe, but costly
Printing the kept pages to a new PDF also leaves the removed pages behind, because the printer driver only ever receives the pages in the range. The price is the document structure. Links, bookmarks, form fields and the tagging that screen readers rely on are all lost, and scanned pages are sometimes recompressed at lower quality. Use printing only when nothing else is available.
What removal does not cover
Content on the pages you keep is untouched. A name or account number on a remaining page needs Redact PDF, which removes the content under the box rather than covering it. Document properties such as title and author also stay. Clear those with Remove PDF Metadata if they reveal something.
What should you remove from scans, statements and contracts?
Remove blank pages, duplicates and pages the recipient did not ask for. Leave signed agreements complete.
Blank pages from duplex scanning
Scanners set to duplex capture the empty backs of single-sided sheets. In the thumbnail view they show as near-white tiles. In a stack of single-sided paper every second page is blank, and removing them halves the page count and often the file size.
Bank and card statements
Many requests for proof of address need only the page with your name, address and the statement date. Keep that page and remove transaction pages that show where you shop. If the request says “full statement” or “all pages”, send all pages. A trimmed statement can be rejected, and a mortgage lender may treat missing pages as a warning sign.
Signed contracts and official records
Do not remove pages from an agreement you are sending as evidence. The other party can reasonably ask why pages are missing, and page numbers such as “3 of 12” make gaps obvious. Send the full document and point to the relevant clause. A PDF with a certificate-based digital signature will also show the signature as invalid after any page is removed.
Troubleshooting
- The PDF asks for a password: enter it when the tool prompts. The output is saved without the password, so add one again with Protect PDF if needed.
- Bookmarks point to missing pages: bookmarks that targeted removed pages no longer lead anywhere. This is expected.
- The file is still large: the big images are on pages you kept. Compress PDF reduces them.
- Pages also need reordering or turning: Organize PDF moves, rotates and deletes on one screen.
- Removed the wrong page: the original file is unchanged. Open it again and start over.
- Thumbnails load slowly: long scans are drawn page by page to keep memory use low on phones. Typing a range is quicker than scrolling through hundreds of thumbnails.
- An upload portal has a page limit: visa, university and insurance forms often accept only ten pages or 5 MB. Remove cover sheets and blank pages first, then compress if the size is still over.
