About Rotate PDF

How does permanent PDF rotation work?

Permanent rotation works by changing the Rotate value that every PDF page carries, which tells viewers to display the page turned by 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. This tool reads that value, adds your change and writes the new value back with the pdf-lib library. The entry is defined in the PDF specification, ISO 32000-2, and must be a multiple of 90.

Because the page content is untouched, the file size barely changes and text stays selectable and searchable. Printers, browsers, Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac and mobile readers all respect the saved value. The downloaded copy is named with “rotated”, so it does not replace the original file on your device.

Why do PDFs end up sideways?

PDFs end up sideways because scanners and export tools guess the orientation, and they often guess wrong. Phone scanning apps read orientation from the camera sensor, which fails for landscape tables or documents photographed from above. Office scanners feed mixed stacks where some sheets go in upside down. Exported slides and spreadsheets often come out as landscape pages inside a portrait document.

The result is a PDF that makes the reader tilt their head or turn their laptop, and that prints sideways on a portrait sheet. Rotating in a viewer helps for one reading session only. Saving the rotation into the file fixes it for every later reader, which matters when the document is sent to a client or an authority.

Should you rotate all pages or only some?

Rotate all pages when a whole scan came out sideways, and single pages when only a few are wrong. The All pages buttons fix a complete document in one click. For mixed documents, leave most pages alone and turn only the ones that need it. The table shows what repeated clicks add up to; Reset clears all changes.

  • Rotated pages get a highlighted border and an angle badge, making it easy to scan a long document for missed pages.
  • Rotation is added to the page's existing orientation, so pages that already displayed correctly do not jump.
  • To reorder or delete pages at the same time, use Organize PDF, which rotates too.
  • Landscape pages trimmed to the wrong area can be fixed afterwards with Crop PDF, which follows the saved rotation.

Why do some tools rotate pages the wrong way?

Some tools rotate the wrong way because they overwrite a page's rotation value instead of adding to it. A page that was already stored at 90 degrees, which is common for phone scans, then ends up facing a direction nobody asked for. The preview and the saved file disagree, and the user has to guess a second time.

Here the thumbnail always shows the page as viewers display it today, and the arrow you click is the turn you get. The thumbnails are rendered by pdf.js, which applies the stored rotation in the same way as Chrome, Firefox and Acrobat do. Pages you did not touch keep the rotation value they had in the original file.

How do you rotate a PDF on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows?

On all four platforms you open this page in a browser, choose the PDF, tap the rotate buttons and press Rotate. On iPhone and iPad, pick the file from the Files app; Safari stores the rotated copy in the Downloads folder of Files. On Android, Chrome saves it to Downloads, where any PDF reader opens it upright.

On a Mac, Preview can rotate pages too, but it rewrites the file through its own engine. On Windows there is no built-in way to save a rotation, because Edge only turns the view. This tool gives the same result on every system, accepts files up to 200 MB and needs no installation or account.

What can rotation not fix?

Rotation cannot straighten slightly skewed scans, because PDF pages turn only in 90-degree steps. If a page looks tilted by a few degrees because the paper sat at an angle on the glass, the deskew feature of the scanning software is the right fix. Text that was scanned sideways stays an image; OCR PDF makes it searchable after rotating.

Signed PDFs lose their digital signature validity after any change, including rotation, so rotate before signing with Sign PDF. Bookmarks, links and form fields are kept, since the document structure is not rebuilt. If the tab reloads on a very large file, the device ran out of memory; a laptop will handle it.

FAQ

Rotate PDF questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Open the file, rotate the pages here and press Rotate to download a new copy. The rotation is stored in the PDF itself, unlike the temporary view rotation that most PDF readers offer in their View menu.

Can I rotate only one page?

Yes. Every thumbnail has its own rotate left, rotate right and 180° buttons. Pages you do not touch stay exactly as they are, and the summary tells you how many pages were rotated and how many were not.

Why does my PDF open sideways again after rotating it in a viewer?

Because many readers only rotate the view and do not save it. This tool changes the page's rotation value inside the file, so the fix sticks in every app, on every device and on paper.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Only the page's orientation value is changed. Text, images and vector graphics are not re-rendered or compressed, so the rotated file has the same sharpness and nearly the same size as the original.

Is it safe to rotate private documents here?

Yes. The PDF is read, rotated and saved inside your browser and is never uploaded, so nothing leaves your device. Passports, payslips and medical scans can be rotated without trusting a third-party server.

Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?

Yes, when you know the password. Enter it when the file opens. The rotated copy is saved without a password, so run it through Protect PDF afterwards if it still has to be locked.
