What are the ways to split a PDF?

There are three ways to split a PDF here: by page ranges, every N pages, and by extracting selected pages. Page ranges suit documents with a clear structure, such as a report with chapters or a bundle of forms where pages 1-2 belong to one person and 3-4 to the next. Ranges may overlap if the same cover page should appear in several outputs.

Every N pages is built for batches with a fixed length. Scanners with a sheet feeder often produce one long PDF; if every document in the stack is two pages, set the number to 2 and get each one back as a separate file. A value of 1 bursts the PDF into single pages.

Extract pages is for picking. Tap the pages you need anywhere in the document and they are saved together, in page order, as a single PDF. Tick One PDF per selected page if you want them as separate files instead. The table sums up which mode gives which result.

Does splitting a PDF lower its quality?

No, splitting does not lower quality, because the chosen pages are copied into a new document with their text, images, fonts, links and rotation intact. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed. The copying is done by the pdf-lib library in a background worker, and the thumbnails are drawn by pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs.

Each part also inherits the title, author, subject and keywords of the original, so the split files stay easy to identify in a document system. Fonts and images are copied only when a page in that part uses them. A 40 MB scan split into four parts therefore gives four files of roughly 10 MB each, not four files of 40 MB.

How does the preview prevent mistakes?

The page grid shows a File badge on every thumbnail before anything is created, so you can see where each output starts and ends. That check matters for scanned batches, where one missing page shifts every later document by one. If a badge looks wrong, fix the range text or the page count and the badges update right away.

Input errors are caught in the same way. Typing a page that does not exist, or a backwards range like 9-4, shows a clear message instead of producing an empty file. Several results are packed into one ZIP when you download everything at once, and the ZIP is named after the original file with “split” added.

How do you split a PDF on a phone or tablet?

Splitting works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android with the same controls as on a computer. Tap Choose file, pick the PDF from the Files app, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads, and tap thumbnails to select pages. Thumbnails are drawn only as you scroll to them, so a document with several hundred pages opens quickly.

On iOS the ZIP lands in the Downloads folder of the Files app, and a tap on it unpacks the PDFs into a folder. Android file managers open ZIP files the same way. If you only need one part on a phone, use Extract pages, because a single PDF is simpler to share from the download sheet than an archive.

Tips for faster splitting

Splitting large files goes fastest when you type ranges instead of tapping and pick the tool that matches the goal. These shortcuts and neighbouring tools save time on long documents and on scans that are still too big after they have been divided.

• Open ranges work: 10- means page 10 to the end, -3 means pages 1 to 3.
• Use Remove Pages instead if you only want to drop a few pages and keep one file.

What are the limits of splitting a PDF in the browser?

The main limits are a 200 MB cap per file and the memory of your device. Very large scans may be slow on older phones because thumbnails are drawn locally. If a big file makes the tab reload, split it on a laptop, or shrink it first with Compress PDF and split the smaller copy.

Some document-level features do not follow the pages. Bookmarks and file attachments of the original are not copied into the split files, and fillable form fields that span several pages can lose their connection when their pages end up in different files. Digital signatures stop validating as well, because every part is a newly written PDF.
