What to include in a bug report

A useful report names the tool page, the device and browser (for example iPhone 15, Safari 18, or Windows 11, Chrome 129), the approximate file size and page count, and the exact wording of any error. If the problem is with a specific file, say what created it (a scanner app, Word, a bank's statement download) rather than sending the file itself. Almost every report can be reproduced from that description with a test document, and confidential files should never need to leave your device.

Because the tools run in your browser, a quick check that helps is whether the same file works in another browser on the same device. If it does, the report is about a browser difference; if it fails everywhere, it is usually the file. Either answer speeds up the fix.

How fast are replies?

Most emails get an answer within two working days. Bug reports that block a tool for everyone are handled first, then feature requests, then general questions. There is no phone line and no live chat, and the site does not use a ticket system, so the reply comes from the same person who builds the tools.

Privacy and data requests

Almost every tool processes files entirely in your browser, so there is normally nothing stored to delete. The three Office converters (Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF) send the file to a converter that deletes it as soon as the PDF is returned. If you want to know exactly what is kept, or to make a request under the UK GDPR or EU GDPR, email with "Privacy" in the subject; the privacy policy explains the details and the legal basis for each part of the site.

Sponsorship and partnerships

Sponsors keep the site free. Placements are clearly labelled, sit below the tool, never use pop-ups and never receive visitor data. Relevant apps and services can ask for current availability and pricing; the why it's free page explains the rules every sponsor agrees to.

Before you write

  • If a PDF will not open, try Repair PDF first. It fixes many damaged downloads and email attachments.
  • If a tool asks for a password, the file is encrypted. Enter the password you were given, or use Unlock PDF to save a copy without it.
  • Very large files (over about 100 MB) can run out of memory on phones. A computer usually handles them.
  • Answers to common questions are in the PDF guides and on each tool page.
