How to Crop PDF Pages and Remove White Margins

How do you crop a PDF for free?

Open Crop PDF, choose the file, drag the crop box over the area to keep and press Crop. The preview and the crop both happen in the browser, so the file is not uploaded, and there is no watermark on the result.

• Choose the PDF. Files up to 200 MB are accepted, and the first page is shown large with a crop box on top.
• Drag the edges or corners of the box, or draw a new box on the page. On a phone, drag the corners with a finger.
• For exact results, type the amount to trim from each edge in millimetres.
• Press Auto-trim margins to fit the box around the printed content of the current page with a small border.
• Keep All pages to use the same box everywhere, or switch to Page by page when layouts differ. Auto-trim every page sets a separate box for each page.
• Press Crop and download the new PDF.

Cropping on each platform

Only the Mac has a built-in PDF crop. Everywhere else a browser tool is the free route.

Good reasons to crop

• Reading on e-readers and tablets: removing 2.5 cm margins from an A4 page makes the text about 30% larger when the page fits the screen width.
• Shipping labels: marketplaces often generate an A4 or Letter page with a 4 × 6 inch label in one corner. Crop to the label so a thermal printer prints it at full size.
• Scanned pages: trim dark edges and the shadow of the scanner lid.
• Slides and figures: cut a chart out of a report page, then export it with PDF to PNG for use in a presentation.
• Uniform pages: when a document mixes page sizes, crop to a consistent area for cleaner printing.

Does cropping a PDF delete the hidden content?

No. Cropping changes the page boundaries that viewers and printers respect, but the text and images outside the new boundary remain in the file. Anyone with a PDF editor can widen the boundary again and see them.

Every PDF page has a media box, the full page size, and may have a crop box, the region that viewers show and printers use. Both are defined in the PDF specification, ISO 32000-2, and are measured in points, where 1 point is 1/72 of an inch. Cropping sets these boxes to the new area. Crop PDF sets the media box, crop box and trim box together, so the new size is the real page size in every app and not a view setting in one. The page content itself is not redrawn.

That is why cropping is lossless: text remains sharp and selectable, links keep working and nothing is re-encoded. It is also why text outside the crop can sometimes still be found by searching or by converting the file with PDF to Text.

Crop, scale or resize: which one do you need?

Crop when part of the page should disappear. Scale when the whole page should stay but print on different paper. The two are often confused, and using the wrong one is the usual reason a result looks odd.

• Cropping cuts the page down. An A4 page cropped to its text block might become 160 × 250 mm. Nothing is enlarged in the file; a viewer that fits the page to the screen simply has less white space to show.
• Scaling happens in the print dialog. Fit to page enlarges or shrinks the whole page to the paper, and Actual size prints at 100%. A Letter document printed on A4 needs Fit, not a crop; the two sizes differ by 6 mm in width and 18 mm in height.
• Cropping then printing with Fit combines both: the margins go, and the remaining content is enlarged to fill the sheet. This is the trick for making small print readable on paper.
• To extract a region as a picture, crop first and then export the page with PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG. The image contains only the visible area.

Cropping a shipping label, step by step

Open the label PDF in Crop PDF and drag the crop box tightly around the label's border. Apply it to all pages if several labels sit in the same position; use Page by page if they do not. A standard label is 4 × 6 inches, about 102 × 152 mm, so check the After crop size shown by the tool and adjust the millimetre fields until the proportions match.

In the print dialog, choose the label printer's paper size, such as 4 × 6 in or 100 × 150 mm, and set scaling to Fit or Actual size according to the printer's instructions. Print one test label on plain paper first and scan the barcode with a phone to make sure nothing is cut off. If the label sits sideways on the page, turn it first with Rotate PDF.

Tips and troubleshooting

• Leave a small margin around text, 3–5 mm. Cropping exactly to the letters looks cramped, and most printers cannot print to the very edge.
• Check odd and even pages. Books and double-sided scans often have the text block shifted left on one side and right on the other. Use Auto-trim every page or Page by page.
• Auto-trim finds nothing: the page is a scan with a gray or speckled background, so there is no clean white edge to detect. Drag the box by hand.
• Auto-trim keeps a wide margin on one side: a page number, header or punch-hole shadow sits out there and counts as content. Drag that edge in by hand.
• The box lands in the wrong place on some pages: the document mixes page sizes or orientations. Switch to Page by page.
• The file is the same size after cropping: that is expected, because the hidden content is still stored. To reduce size, use Compress PDF.
• The PDF asks for a password: enter it when prompted. The crop is applied on your device.

When not to crop

Do not crop files going to a commercial printer unless the printer asks for it. Print-ready PDFs carry bleed and trim information in their page boxes, and changing them can cause white edges or a rejected job. Do not crop forms that will be processed automatically; many systems expect the original page size to locate the fields. And if the aim is to make text larger on paper, printing with Fit to page after cropping scales the content up, which can push small footnotes and barcodes out of tolerance. Test one page first.
